Kinja'd!!!4 Kinja'd!!! 10

Over the last few days I’ve gone through a box of old CB equipment I found in the garage a couple weeks ago.

Kinja'd!!!

Most of it either came from garage sales/flea markets or my grandfathers basement and has remained untouched in my garage for at least 5 years.

Kinja'd!!!

They were filthy and I also surely wasn’t going to wire any of these into my car so they got blown off, wiped down several times and years of grime scrubbed off. Those manuals look amazing though with a 72 or 73 publication date.

Most of these aren’t anything special, couple Radio Shack branded ones, a Midland one and one slick looking GE unit. It looked cool enough to me to warrant being disassembled, thoroughly cleaned and put back together.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

It ended up cleaning up and decently well - the mic still has some garbage in it but I spent more time than I already planned cleaning it...

Kinja'd!!!

So when it was all said and done I had 4 functional radios and 1 that just squealed anytime a mic was plugged into it. I do absolutely love the look of that GE unit but have zero practical use for them.

These units are all to old to be of much practical use and only the GE seems to have any real value (~$60 on ebay) but this was fun and a decent excuse to use my new bench power supply.

If anyone has a burning desire or fetish for these old hunks of radio electronics let me know. Otherwise they’ll go up on FB marketplace as while I wouldn’t mind keeping that GE unit I have no use for it and would rather go full bore into HAM if I’m going to mount a radio in a vehicle.

And here I am trying to figure out my new HAM.

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t quite get APRS, Digital radio and...well...most things.  Im still trying to figure out a good way to program it without having to pony up 25 bucks for software or do it all by hand.

Your adventures are part of why I posted this - last time I had a CB in the truck thought was 10 years ago and it hardly caught any traffic then so it doesn’t feel useful right now.

What’s funny is that I’m a certified Motorola Wave 5000 Solutions Integrator - but only useful on their enterprise stuff. If you want me to build a radio system that’s scale able , highly available and lets you talk to folks over IP to another state I’m your man. If you want me to figure out why your radio isn’t working though I’m useless...

We have a few folks on our team that are big RF spectrum nerds and know all that stuff and I handle all the server and network stuff...

You have tempted me to get into HAM though and get licensed as I want to start wandering further off the grid in the next couple years.  Here in Missouri I’m rarely more than 20 miles away from a cell signal.

Back in highschool I had a radio in my Van and pretended to be good at this - I was not and truckers would regularly yell at me to knock it off.

CB was really popular because sporadic E was conducive to that band and modulation back in the day, because of the sun cycle we have low Sporadic E now and so CB doesn’t have the legs it used to in its heyday...plus as you said there are cellphones that do more than CB could ever wet dream about.

In all reality I should just get a GPS communicator - something that in an emergency would let me call for help or check in with the Mrs. I usually explore alone and last summer I caught an ear ful as I was about 6  hours late for a planned check-in as cell reception was worse than I expected up west of Fort Collins.

I was fine but she was very right in her concern - I just haven’t picked a device/plan since most off-grid excursions are not going to happen this summer.

Birddog may want that GE for his '78 Chevy C-10. I sent him a link to this post.
